Scientist, Protein Biochemistry

At GSK, we have bold ambitions for patients, aiming to positively impact the health of 2.5 billion people by the end of the decade. R&D is committed to discovering and delivering transformational vaccines and medicines to prevent and change the course of disease.

We believe the Greater Boston area is an important hub for the biotech and pharma industry, which is why we’ve invested in growing our footprint and expanding our R&D space in Cambridge, with a primary focus on additional state-of-the-art lab space. Here, we will bring together talent and expertise, building upon GSK’s long history of vaccine development, to create globally leading viral capabilities and cutting-edge vaccines technologies, as we add to our robust portfolio targeting infectious diseases at every stage of life.

We’re looking for an innovative and highly skilled protein biochemist to drive production, isolation, and purification of proteins that enable vaccines, biologics, and therapeutic monoclonal antibody (mAb) development. This role is central to advancing GSK’s efforts and requires a strong design-for-developability mindset to minimize CMC and clinical risks. As a technical leader, you will own the design, purification, and optimization of constructs, leveraging cutting-edge chromatography and filtration techniques to deliver high-quality protein reagents for downstream assessments. Successful candidates will drive innovation and reproducibility while collaborating across functional areas to advance GSK’s mission to deliver impactful medicines and vaccines to billions globally.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead protein isolation, and purification pipelines to meet stringent design-for-developability standards.
  • Drive optimization of protein purification protocols through hands-on expertise in chromatography techniques (affinity, ion-exchange, multimodal, hydrophobic interaction, size-exclusion chromatography) and filtration methods (tangential flow filtration and buffer exchange).
  • Actively collaborate with cross-functional teams to address complex challenges in construct design, protein behavior, and structural assessments.
  • Ensure rigorous documentation and implement quality control measures to support intellectual property and enable reagent reuse.
  • Regularly present project updates, purification outcomes, and next steps at internal review meetings to align stakeholders.

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD in life sciences with 0+ years of relevant experience in biotechnology, MS with ≥2 years' experience, or BS with ≥4 years' experience in biotechnology-related fields.
  • At least one year of hands-on protein purification experience, including chromatography (SEC, ion-exchange, affinity) and filtration (TFF, buffer exchange).
  • One or more years of experience with mammalian cell cultures (HEK293 and/or CHO cell lines) for protein expression systems.
  • One or more years of experience operating and maintaining AKTA systems or equivalent platforms for protein purification.
  • One or more years of experience with standard lab techniques: SDS-PAGE, western blot, molecular biology tools (cloning, PCR).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated expertise in advanced purification techniques, including multimodal chromatography and rigorous design strategies.
  • Experience working with diverse protein expression systems (bacteria, insect, yeast) beyond mammalian cultures.
  • Strong problem-solving, troubleshooting, and process optimization skills.
  • Capacity to work independently, manage competing priorities, and adapt to evolving timelines while driving results.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Able to efficiently manage uncertainty, changes in priority and timeline restrictions.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with a fluency in English.
